Take Care by Debbie Smith
In your quest for success, there are two powerful tools you will want to master. Self- compassion, and self-esteem. Self-compassion is always being kind, patient and understanding with yourself, never demeaning or judgemental. Self-esteem is appreciating and honoring yourself; including learning to accept who you are, your differentness, and in doing so, the world will see these things as well.
How do you master these very important tools? By learning and using another tool of course! This tool is Personal Responsibility. Most everyone takes personal responsibility for many things in their lives. Those of us who have low self-esteem and self-compassion are likely not taking personal responsibility in some areas. For instance; you have children and you make sure they have clean laundry, healthy meals, you get them off to school every day, help with homework and get them to the dentist and doctor regularly. You also volunteer for school activities and you may be boosting others’ self-esteem, and it’s so routine you don’t realize you’re doing it!
Life is busy, we sometimes forget that we also need to take care of ourselves. Do you eat healthily, or do you grab a protein bar and eat it in the car on the way to work? I had a friend tell me that since the birth of her child, she ate the quickest, most convenient things possible so that she had time to care for her baby and get to work on time. Even opening the refrigerator door an extra time to grab yogurt was too much. So she gave up having healthy meals right away, and soon her exercise routine went by the wayside. She quickly became very depressed and anxious!.
Only we can address these issues. Make time for yourself, it’s okay to ask others for help. Taking personal responsibility for self-care, building self-esteem and self-compassion is so empowering!
